Kicking off Women of Color Herstory Month 2010!

Peace Everyone,
Women of Color Herstory Month kicked off on Monday February 15th, 2010 and it's been an awesome time so far. New Voices Pittsburgh was presented with an official City Council Proclamation from Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle on Tuesday February 16th and February 15th - March 15th has now been declared Women of Color Herstory Month in the City of Pittsburgh. That is so exciting and we are grateful to all of our supporters who continue to encourage us as we do this work.

On Thursday, February 18th ( Audre Lorde's Birthday!!)we had our press conference at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. We were joined by Councilman Lavelle, Ada Gay Griffin, Director of Annual Giving at the August Wilson Center and La'Keisha Wolf of the Ujamaa Collective. We also presented our FABULOUS new WOCHM logo designed by artist, Yejide KMT.

If you weren't able to join us, we've included some great pics of the folks who were with us on Thursday.

All the folks who joined us to kick off the month long celebration!

Powerful young women

Grand Dame of the Reproductive Justice movement and Management Circle member of New Voices Pittsburgh, Lois 'Toni' McClendon.

Please join us on Thursday February 25th for the New Voices Awards 2010/ "Womb-Words, Thirsting" by Lenelle Moise.

The evening will begin by honoring four women of color with the New Voices Awards 2010 for their extraordinary commitment to Human Rights and Reproductive Justice for women and girls of color in Pittsburgh. The honorees are Aya de Chellis, Birth Circle Community-Based Doula & Nueve Lunas Volunteer, Amanda Green Hawkins, Allegheny County Council, Marica Jackson, President, Women of Visions & Artist-Activist and Kelly e. Parker, Founder, ABAFASI & Community Activist.

"Womb-Words, Thirsting" by Haitian-American artist-activist Lenelle Moise mixes a brew of womanist Vodou jazz, queer theory hip-hop, spoken word, song and movement. This performance is an interactive performance of patchwork poetic storytelling delivered - slam-style - from the gut. Lenelle Moise re-conceives memory, dances revolution, reclaims F-words and boldly speaks out about growing up immigrant, working-class, politicized and queer(ed). It will be an empowering and entertaining evening of theatre for social change!

Written and performed by Lenelle Moise. Womb-Words, Thirsting runs 90 minutes with no intermission. Visit http://www.lenellemoise.com/. General Tickets, $10, and VIP Tickets, $50, are available at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/99370. General Tickets at the door are $15.

For low-income, student, senior and group rates, call 412.731.2667 or email herstory.nvp@gmail.com. We will also be collecting new clothing and personal hygiene product donations for Haiti in collaboration with the Ujamaa Collective at this event to donate to Dwa Fanm - a Women's Rights organization that advocates on behalf of the Haitian Immigrant community. Through service, education, advocacy and grassroots programs, Dwa Fanm works to end discrimination, violence, and other forms of injustice in New York City and abroad. http://www.dwafanm.org/
